I recovered from my bias about network marketing as a valid business model when I realized I could advertise online and guide people looking for what I had to offer to a compelling presentation. I realized it was obvious people would buy, and that they may as well be buying from me.
It was a real light bulb over the head moment when it hit me. It was right after my wife had walked in the door from work and she just had the kind of day that makes you want to scream at your boss and quit your job. I of course in my infinite wisdom told her I would solve her problem simply by consulting Google. They rarely let me down, so why not!
I searched “Get Rich Quick”!
After several weeks of research I ended up rolling the dice on the company whose site sparked the realization I mentioned above. It cost me about $800 on the credit card at the time.
What I really liked about this was you could do it from home and you wouldn’t have to tell your friends until the money was already rolling in.
All my wife said when I finally worked up the nerve to tell her was. “You better earn your money back and quit”. God love her. Why would I quit if I can earn my money back?
As luck would have it I did earn my money back. In fact I enjoyed 5 figure months. You should have seen the guy at the bank telling me I needed to stop bringing in $6,000.00 checks and start only accepting wire transfers. That was a totally cool day.
There was a down side. Advertising that could move an $8,000.00 + product did not come cheap. Eventually I was spending 1.5k on advertising for every new rep I brought on board to use for starting their business. The advertising I was doing had helped me place in the top 20 of the company with in my first 3 months in the industry. I figured that should really help people rocket off to success since it worked so well for me and it took me 3 months to get to that point. “Heck, they should do better than me”, I thought.
Well, they sucked at it. I felt responsible. It turned out that I would have to provide my team with more than just responsive advertising if I was going to get them to be successful.
However, I did recognize the value surrounding me - the people I was in business with. I clearly saw how we could place an almost corporate structure around the team and leaders I was working with.
We all had a lot to do and too much of it involved things not everyone enjoyed about the industry. Not everyone felt the same way about the same tasks. Some were stronger in areas I was less inclined to enjoy and vice versa.
Not only that but when you place people according to their strengths higher productivity results because everyone is doing the job they are best suited for. It had been under my nose all along.
Add together automated marketing + automated training + strength based task assignment, and you end up with one heck of a team based marketing system.
The system/community, Occupy the City, turned out to be a real diamond sifter. The people that make it through the process are worth our time once they get to us. The tire kickers no longer get in the way.
We spend our time working with professionals that have a huge drive for success. Most of them are already successful business owners and entrepreneurs. This is exactly the caliber of individual that will make you successful in this industry, and we have them coming to us every day with a desire to be a part of something so timely, yet forward thinking.

I was really interested in this article. It is so true that if you have automated Marketing + automated training + a team based marketing system, it’s foolproof if people are willing to spend to time learning and doing. Very professional article.
